TEMPORARY RESIDENCE
  • Temporary Foreign Workers
Thousands of foreign workers enter Canada annually to work temporarily with Canadian employers in areas of skills shortages. These workers must generally have a valid work permit to work in Canada, though there are some limited categories of work permit-free employment. Work permits are generally sponsored by an employer, and are issued after the employee has received and accepted a job offer in Canada.

  • Students
Foreign nationals require a Study Permit to study in Canada for courses or programs of 6 months duration or more. To secure this, the prospective student would generally need to:
    • Have an acceptance letter from a qualified Canadian institution
    • Have sufficient funds for tuition and living costs, and
    • Be able to prove that he or she is a genuine student, who will not remain in Canada illegally after completion of his or her studies.
Important note
Many temporary residents are restricted in what they can do in Canada. For example, visitors cannot generally enter the Canadian labour market.
Foreign workers must be sponsored by their employer and are restricted to working with that employer. Students also have limited access to the Canadian labour market, and all these categories of persons must leave Canada at the end of the period authorized for their stay.
