Canada: Open to the World
Canada has great ethnic diversity, and welcomes people from all over the world. Statistics from the 2001 Census show that over 200 ethnic groups are represented in Canada. The Canadian government recognizes that immigrants are critical to the social, cultural and economic development of the nation, and that they play a fundamental role in addressing Canada's declining birth rates, ageing populations and labour market needs. Currently, more than 70% of Canada's labour market growth comes from immigration.

However immigration to Canada is a privilege and not a right. Canada retains the right to deny admission to any person or persons who may be of medical, criminal or security concern.

Canada has successfully received and integrated immigrants for decades, and continues to pursue an immigration policy to attract people and to ensure that Canada remains a destination of choice.

The country has an enviable international reputation for being a racially tolerant, multicultural and open society. The Canadian Government actively works to eliminate racist and discriminatory barriers and to ensure the full integration and inclusion of immigrants in all aspects of Canadian society. It also invests significant sums in settlement services to facilitate newcomer integration into the economy and society.
